TREATMENT OF URINARY INCONTINENCE WITH FUNCTIONAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION

In the Baltic States, a new treatment became available to patients a few years ago – functional magnetic stimulation. There are only a few sets of such equipment in Lithuania and the only Tapk Sveikas clinic in Vilnius. The low-intensity magnetic field generating equipment is used more for prophylaxis than for treatment. The Magneto Stym equipment set is the highest intensity magnetic therapy device not only for prevention but also for treatment.

The intense magnetic field affects not only the smallest blood vessels but also causes contractions of the smooth muscles in the internal organs. These muscles are otherwise severely affected, so strong magnetic field therapy becomes almost the only effective way to strengthen, for example, the pelvic floor muscles. The magnetic field in a neuron (the main cell in the nervous system) causes an electric current, a phenomenon called electromagnetic induction. Electromagnetic induction is measured in Tesla units. Our device generates up to 3.5 T of electromagnetic field (more than 200 times stronger than classical magnetic field therapy) thus creating a strong artificial nerve signal that also initiates deep muscle contractions. The US Food and Drug Administration recognized functional magnetic stimulation by the FDA as a conservative treatment for urine as early as 1998.

Weakening of the pelvic floor, bladder muscles, or asynchronous work can lead to involuntary, uncontrolled urine leakage in both sexes at different ages. Young women are more likely to suffer from stress urinary incontinence when weakened pelvic floor muscles negatively affect bladder closure. Older women are more likely to experience acute urinary incontinence when urine leaks when there is an urgent need to urinate. The urge to urinate forces you to get up several times a night, especially in many older women with a combination of acute and stress urinary incontinence.
Conservative and long-used treatment for all types of urinary incontinence (acute, mixed, stressful, postpartum) is pelvic floor muscle training. Functional magnetic stimulation allows urinary incontinence to be treated faster and more effectively. Studies at the University of Ljubljana demonstrated the effectiveness of functional magnetic stimulation in 160 women with various types of urinary incontinence. All of them were treated for 8 weeks, 2 times a week with FMS therapy.

After the course of procedures, the diagnosis was “completely dry” in 58 to 95% of the study participants:

All 95% of women with postpartum urinary incontinence achieved a “completely dry” result earlier than the planned course of treatment – 16 procedures.
During magnetotherapy, a focused, pulsating strong magnetic field is directed to the perineum. This is how it forces the pelvic floor muscles to contract and relax. Muscle stimulation takes place while sitting in a comfortable chair with a built-in electromagnetic device controlled by an external controller. The intensity of the magnetic field is gradually increased to a different tolerance limit for each patient. Magnetotherapy is used not only for the treatment of urinary incontinence or strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles, it is also used for the treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, nervous and circulatory systems. In addition, it eliminates acute and chronic pain, swelling, inflammation, lowers blood pressure, improves bone healing processes. During FMS therapy, the genital and buttock muscles are actively contracted, which has a positive effect on erection and the ability to reach orgasm. During the procedure, the patient feels muscle contractions and relaxation, heat under the applicator. Duration of the procedure ~ 20 min. The recommended duration of the course is 10-15 procedures. Patients begin to feel the positive effect after 3-4 weeks, performing procedures 2-3 times a week.
